The Teacher Who Made Her Students Eat Bugs!

Yep ... that's me!

Well, that's what my family says, at least!

Here's the proof:

That boy is bending over trying not to vomit ... it's not everyday we eat bugs in the United States, and our sensitive little palates are not very accustomed to the texture and taste of some critters.

So, when I offered EXTRA CREDIT to those students willing to give it a try, these boys jumped right on board. They were trying to stay out of summer school.

It was a funny day, I have video that I really need to make digital ... there were a few hurlers, but for the most part, the bugs stayed down and the kids got their extra credit.

And to my family that insists that I MADE them do it ... WHAT.EVER! (I see lots of smiles in that picture above, don't you?)

That day had to be in my top 5 of ALL TIME in the classroom, that class especially. I don't know what it was about those kids, but they won my heart over pretty quickly, and they liked me, too!

We had more fun trying to learn science than we probably should have. Thank heavens we were in a portable, or all of the teachers in the building would have been hating me. We were noisy, we were silly, we were having a great time, and somehow, we were still learning.

I see those "Skater Boys" in that picture and my heart is happy and sad. They were my favorite students of all my years of teaching. I really hate to admit that I had favorites, but those boys (despite the "D" grades they were earning in my class) were top on my list.

They came to my class, even though they were known to sluff some of their others. They ate lunch in my room. They were always willing to help with a lesson or demonstration. They were good kids, despite what everyone else might have thought.

A few years ago I was watching the news and learned that one of the boys in that picture died in a motorcycle accident. I cried, I cried for a while, I am crying while I type this. I hope he is at peace and I hope he left this world that way. Whether he knew it or not, he brought a great deal of joy into my life, my teaching career especially. He and his skater friends -

Thanks boys!

Sorry I made you eat bugs, but it saved you from Summer School!

You sound like a teacher I wish I had had. I don't think I would have eaten the bugs, but I would have loved watching others do it. :) I am sorry about the boy in the accident, but I'll bet he would have needed no apology from you. I'll bet he remembered you and your class as one of the best times in high school.

I'd be in summer school if that were the requirement. :) Thanks for visiting. :)

You are a teacher that makes/made a difference. I hope my little man is blessed enough to be in a classroom where eating bugs is an option. I'm sure he'd secretly love it. (and thanks for stopping by my blog with good advice :)

I love that you let them eat bugs for extra credit! Sorry to hear about losing one of them, but I'm sure you were an influence on his life as well.

*hugs*

You were the best kind of teacher.....the rare species that love it, have fun with it and are loved back! If only we could clone you :)

I definitely wouldn't have eaten the bugs, but I think I would have loved having you as a teacher! So sorry to hear about the loss of one of your former students.

you sound like an awesome teacher...what kind of bugs did they have to eat? i am sorry to hear about one of your students passing and i agree with everyone above, as much as he impacted you, you probably impacted him double.

I think it is great to have a teacher who cares. You can tell that you care when sluffers come to your class. My son thought school was optional his Junior year, (he found out it wasn't his Sr. year) but there were a couple of teachers he didn't want to disappoint and didn't miss their class. They cared.

You sounds like a fun teacher!

Wait, you mean if I'd have taught science instead of English I could've made them eat BUGS??? Dang! I missed out! :)

I know what you mean about the favorite class, in spite of it all. I have one of those, too.

Thanks for visiting my blog!
I might have tried a bug, but I definitely would have been one of the kids that threw up!

haha that doesn't sound too bad (if they were still alive i would have a problem with it)...once when i was in panama i had to eat fish eyeballs. we were staying with the tribe and the men told us that it was a delicacy. i was the only girl that would do it...and they only gave eyeballs to the girls. so i ended up eating about 6 eyeballs...only after i forced them down did the men start laughing. they were impressed and couldn't believe i did it (neither could i for that matter)

your kids got out of summer school...i got the respect of all the tribes men and looks of disgust from everyone else hahaha
